All teams not being in the playoffs should create unique races at the top and bottom of both divisions
The National Basketball League of Canada has released its
schedule for the upcoming season.
The Kitchener-Waterloo Titans, one of the two new expansion teams in NBL Canada this year, will be hosting the Orangeville A’s as part of the league’s
slate of Boxing Day games to kick off the 2016-17 regular season.
The other opening day matchups include the new-look Saint
John Riptide facing off against The Island Storm at the Eastlink Centre in
Charlottetown, the reigning Central Division champion-London Lightning taking
on the Niagara River Lions at Budweiser Gardens and the Halifax Hurricanes –
last year’s NBLC champions – hosting the Moncton Miracles at home at the Scotiabank
Centre.
The league's other expansion franchise, the Cape Breton Highlanders,
will be tipping off on its home court at Centre 200 against the
Hurricanes Dec. 27.
The Windsor Express will be the last team to start their
season when they play the A’s in Orangeville Dec. 28.
"A record number of teams will be playing in our league
this season ... All teams not being in the playoffs should create unique
races at the top and bottom of both divisions,” said NBLC Commissioner David
Magley in a league-issued press release.
"New natural rivalries are being created as Cape Breton becomes our
second Nova Scotian team while Kitchener-Waterloo is in the geographic center
of our current Ontario footprint. All of
this adds up to a fan friendly product that should only be even better than the
previous seasons.”
Each team will play 40 games throughout the regular season.
Two clubs could also miss the playoffs this year thanks to
the expansion franchises. The last time every NBLC team did not automatically
make the playoffs was during the league’s inaugural season in 2011-12, according to Daktronics.
